Keith Ellis of the Adirondack Folk School visits Rotary

Adirondack Folk School representative Keith Ellis addressed last week’s Rotary Luncheon.  The Folk School is located in Lake Luzerne and offers a variety of adult education classes.   Mr. Ellis, a member of the Warrensburg Rotary Club, discussed the mission of the Adirondack Folk School which is to inspire “hands, heart, & mind” by teaching traditional arts, crafts and culture of the Adirondacks in a hands-on, non-competitive learning environment.

The school offers classes in basketry, blacksmithing, boats & paddles, ceramics, cooking, drawing, jewelry-making and a variety of other hands-on courses.  Mr. Ellis reported that this is the only school in the country that is dedicated to teaching the arts, crafts, and culture of the unique Adirondack region.  He also discussed the process of making wood paddles for canoes, making twig furniture, in addition to making Adirondack chairs.

The Adirondack Folk School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency.  The school is made up of local artisans and crafts people who volunteer and are interested in teaching these traditional skills to the community.  The school maintains a great website containing vast information.  Please visit them at www.adirondackfolkschool.org.
