The Saratoga Springs Rotary Club has donated $2,000 to assist homeowners and other organizations in rebuilding the flood-ravaged areas of Saratoga and surrounding communities such as Middleburgh and Schoharie.

These funds will be added to other donations from other Rotary clubs in the 7190 District, which includes Saratoga.

In the spirit of Rotary’s commitment to “service above self,” donations were also made to projects in Africa and South America. Saratoga Springs Rotary donated $1,000 to Rotary International’s Foundation for the Horn of Africa Famine and Refugee Relief Fund. This foundation joins the more than 36,000 Rotary clubs worldwide to aid the 20 million people in the Horn of Africa who are at risk of starvation.

Additionally, the club has supported city residents Dr. John H. Streit and Karen Flewelling with their projects in Rwanda and Brazil. The club donated $2,000 toward shipping medical supplies and textbooks to Kigali, Rwanda Medical University. Streit became involved with the medical university while volunteering for Medical Missions for Children, a group co-founded by Saratoga native Dr. Dennis Snyder.

A donation of $300 was made to assist in the building of cisterns to provide clean water for families living in the Varzea Grande District of Brazil. Flewelling is working with Habitat for Humanity to build these cisterns in Northern Brazil.

Rotary Club members meet at 12:15 p.m. every Wednesday at Longfellows Restaurant for fellowship, lunch and an informational program. Community residents interested in membership are invited to attend. The weekly gatherings are the launching point for the club’s community and international service activities.

Saratoga Springs Rotary Club raises funds for its charitable and educational programs through the annual Home and Garden Show, held in late winter at the City Center.
